Safety guide
Secondgear connects buyers and sellers directly. We do not handle payments or shipping, so it is important to take sensible precautions when trading.
Staying safe when buying or selling
Meet in a safe place
For collection, meet in a well-lit public area during daylight. If visiting a home address, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Check documents before paying
For vans, always check the V5C logbook matches the seller, the VIN on the vehicle matches the paperwork, and the MOT history online. Never rely on photos of documents alone.
Never pay a deposit to someone you have not met
Scammers often ask for deposits via bank transfer before you have seen the item. Legitimate sellers will let you inspect before paying. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Use traceable payment methods
Bank transfers offer limited protection once sent. For higher-value items, consider using a payment method that offers buyer protection or paying in person after inspection.
Inspect before you buy
Check the item matches the listing photos and description. For vans, take a test drive and consider an independent inspection. For gear, test electrical items before leaving.
Be cautious of off-platform requests
If a seller asks you to move communication to a different platform, proceed with caution. Keep records of all messages and agreements.
Trust your instincts
If something feels wrong, walk away. No deal is worth risking your safety or money.
