Set the budget around the trips you want to do
A £5,000 build works when the brief is tight. Decide early whether you need weekend comfort, off-grid power, extra berths or year-round heating, then spend on the systems that make those trips possible.
Trying to do everything at once is how budget builds become half-finished. Start with insulation, bed, storage and a simple electrical setup that can grow later.
Buy used where condition is easy to inspect
Seats, storage units, roof bars and some kitchen kit can all make sense second-hand. Batteries, gas components and anything safety-critical need more care and are often better bought new unless the provenance is crystal clear.
- Used: cupboards, folding tables, racks, trim pieces and some appliances
- New: gas fittings, fresh wiring, fuses and safety kit
- Check measurements twice before buying any large interior furniture
Leave space for final fixes
Even tidy budget builds need a last round of sealing, rattles, fasteners and snagging. Keep a small reserve for those jobs so the van feels finished rather than permanently one weekend away from complete.
